The Danger of Eisegesis
Eisegesis occurs when we read the Bible with a conclusion already formed and search for verses that support it. It is a common but dangerous error because it turns our ideas into "biblical truth."
The Virtue of Exegesis
Exegesis, from the Greek exegeisthai (to lead out), seeks to extract the meaning already in the text. The interpreter submits to the text, not the other way around.
Warning Signs
If we always find in the Bible exactly what we already believed, we are probably practicing eisegesis without realizing it.
